5th-Jan-2010 09:36 am - [Politics] We elected these buffons?

Cheap mileage is all they care about. It would explain the reason behind my country’s economic ruin and our massive brain drain (heck, even I’m looking to leave this country to work overseas, and I love this place!). The politicians in this country, the so-called leaders are only concerned about filling their pockets.

After all, if Islam is the religion of the country, why does this cause such a non-controversy?

Drama queens, la I tell you. Better than Hong Kong drama. No need to sub into English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Malay, or even Tamil. Just read your local newspapers and laugh. Or cry. Whichever you prefer.

You know the best part? These politicians don’t know the meaning of what they preach. Hangat-hangat tahi ayam. They know only hot air. All they know is to beat their chest like monkey in jungle. They dunno what it means “service to the people” means. They know how to talk cock only.

After all, even a 17-year-old knows what service means! And she’s part of the age group that our government loves to vilify so much. Malu tak? No, they have no shame. That’s why these politicians still dare to show their face.

PS: If you like the entry in question, please vote for her. I believe that people like her should be rewarded and praised for what they’re doing. They don’t have to do it, but they do it anyway.

A far cry above the self-serving people we call our politicians. Selangor MPs, this applies to you too!

Vivid pictures, poetry, ruminations, and confessions from the nether hours between dusk and dawn. Originally formed to celebrate the city at night, there's a strong urban theme.

Self-described as "a little community with a lot of rage," you can soak up impassioned vibes and read blistering exposes detailing sexist attitudes in the news, pop culture, and science! A must-join community if you are, or love, a feminist. (NB: the topic of whether a "man" can be a feminist is outside the scope of this spotlight, but will probably wind up on the Writer's Block.)

"The executors of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's literary estate have threatened to withdraw Guy Ritchie's rights to the Sherlock Holmes story if the director hints at a homosexual relationship between the lead characters in his sequel.

Robert Downey, Jr., who plays the supersleuth in Ritchie's new movie adaption, recently appeared on David Letterman's U.S. talk show and hinted at a homoerotic subtext in the relationship between his character and Jude Law's Dr. Watson.

During the interview the actor also asked the audience to decide whether Holmes is "a very butch homosexual."

But Downey, Jr.'s comments have infuriated Andrea Plunket, who controls the remaining U.S. copyrights to the Holmes story, and she's threatened to withdraw permission for a follow-up if Ritchie suggests the detective is more than just friends with his sidekick.

She says, "I hope this is just an example of Mr Downey's black sense of humour. It would be drastic, but I would withdraw permission for more films to be made if they feel that is a theme they wish to bring out in the future. I am not hostile to homosexuals, but I am to anyone who is not true to the spirit of the books."

What about all those scenes with Holmes fawning over Irene Adler??

What about the hundreds and thousands of pastiches with Holmes associated with Irene Adler? What about The Seven Per Cent Solution, which proposed that Moriarty was not Holmes's arch-enemy but that he was Holmes's father??

This is outrageous! I understand that Holmes being sexually in love with Watson is non-canonical, but what about the OTHER non-canonical things that were done to Holmes before in the name of pastiche (and the movie IS pastiche)? Furthermore, the speculation that Holmes is gay is one of the most common fan speculations in the fandom. From what I have heard, even one of the older, made-for-TV series (either the one with Jeremy Brett or Basil Somethingmajig) played around with the idea, with Holmes and Watson going undercover as gay lovers in an underground gay club in London.

Is she only accepting the Holmes of canon where he is described as almost asexual? Then what about all the pastiche about Irene Adler?

The only other edition of this news comes from Contact Music from twelve hours ago, so I don't know how reputable this source is. I suppose that this statement was made before the release of the movie, but it still doesn't excuse this kind of statement.

Until further notice, all my characters and role-playing will be on hiatus. Sorry people, I’ve need to clear things up in my life before I can indulge in this hobby. I sincerely apologise to whoever’s involved in a thread with me now.

Sincerely
Over-exhausted mun.

Am now, happily a contributor on Keisha's Wordpress blog. Do check me out there!
From the Urban Dictionary

Danger Close

In close air support, artillery, mortar, and naval gunfire support fires, it is the term included in the method of engagement segment of a call for fire which indicates that friendly forces are within close proximity of the target, usually 600 metres.
However, the close proximity distance can be determined by the weapon and munition fired.

Daphne (My SOOM Chrom human head) is so friggin' fabulous it hurts. She needs a body, man. She needs one bad.

Pointless first post of 2010! Whoo, party!

Actually, no more partying. Champagne gave me a sour stomach and my knee's still blown.
2nd-Jan-2010 05:43 pm - Ughhhh...
Am really, really not looking forward to tomorrow. My sanity leave ends today, and it's back to work tomorrow.

Mercifully writing stories is in some aspects like riding a bike. The how-to knowledge goes away slowly, so it's not a big leap to warm myself up for work tomorrow.

Still...ughhhh....it's going to be a long time more until my next long holiday.

1st-Jan-2010 08:55 pm - Life, A Reflection
It is such that our life can be taken away at any moment, without any warning or any notice of any kind.
So lets live a life worth living at all times. Worth commemorating. Worth celebrating.

For this is all we've got to work at in this world, ultimately.
1st-Jan-2010 03:52 pm - An Interesting Article
A good friend of mine and fellow airhead, Matthew Penfold passed me this article as we were discussing the role of an air force in the modern age.

For the link phobic, and in case the page disappears, I have reproduced it here )

The arguments for combat air support, or CAS and battlefield air interdiction or BAI, most interesting. I could only read it briefly now, as I have to step out with Keisha, but will blog more on it when time permits.
30th-Dec-2009 11:31 pm - Very late wishlist
I guess this is more of a New Year's wishlist now than a Christmas one, but I got so busy last year I never posted one, and I was determined this year to have enough time to at least mention it.

I must have been difficult for people to get me things this year, because I really don't need anything. I have more clothes than will fit in two dressers AND a closet, I have the basics that I need, my computer still works great, and I have a wonderful fiancé who's actually building me my very own music player software. But I guess I still have a few wishes, so here goes (in reverse order 'cause I saw someone do it and think it looks neat):

10. Although in the past I've usually posted a link to my Amazon.com wishlist, I think it's about time I posted a link to The Original Really Useful Gift Catalog 2009. This is a catalog from ADRA, where instead of buying a present for yourself, you save lives, send children to school, or improve an entire family's welfare by the money you spend. If you've got any extra money you can afford to spend, even as little as $1 can send children to school or pay for hot meals so they can grow and learn.

9. I'd love it if you could recommend me a good book collection manager. I have over a thousand books on shelves in my room and need to keep all the info on them in one place. The program I'm currently using does not have a working method for obtaining book data online using the ISBN (it previously did, but I have more books that need to be entered and manually entering it all is way too slow!). I need one that will, given the book's ISBN, retrieve all the information it can on the book and dump it into a database that I can later browse, search, sort, etc. I'd prefer something on my local computer but an online database would work great too. I can't afford to spend money on it, though, so suggestions for something I can get free would be welcome.

8. Consider adopting a pet from a shelter, particularly a no-kill shelter! If you've already done so, I'd love to hear about your pet. :)

7. Relating to #8, we have an older kitten (lovely tabico--very sweet personality) in our house that someone dumped in our neighborhood on Christmas Eve or Day. The poor thing was hungry and cold for several days before a kindhearted neighbor took her in. We went to visit and decided we'd have to try to find a home for her. Currently we haven't found anyone who wants her (I'd love to keep her but not sure that can be managed at our house--we already have two cats and two dogs). My wish is that either we're able to keep her, or that we find a good home for her.

6. I wish I had a good mp3 player or mp3 CD player, even. I used to have a great mp3 CD player I took everywhere and played music, but it quit suddenly, and now I don't have any way to play my music in the car so that I'm the only one who hears it--unless I go to all the trouble of booting up a laptop, plugging it into the power converter, and popping a CD into that. So I'd love one that I can use to listen to music on long car trips when I'm not the driver.

5. I need a good flash drive, preferably at least 2 gigs. I've got a small one I use to play music in my car (I have a USB port plug-in spot on my car stereo) and a 1 gig that carries documents and stuff--and which I managed to crack the case on, so who knows how long the thing will work. I also don't have one with enough room on it to put a movie on (if they're the double CD size), or anything, and that would be handy.

4. I would love it if someone would give me some credits on PaperbackSwap: I would LOVE to be able to request a bunch of books that I've been wanting! I'm currently hoarding my tiny few trying to decide which books to get and which to give up on getting. A few more credits would give me the freedom to get a few without constantly reviewing my choices and wishing I'd gotten something else.

3. If you're a fan of the X-Men movieverse, and you dabble in writing, I'd love it if you wrote me a fanfic! I would love either a Scott/Ororo or Scott/Rogue fic, mainly because those are incredibly rare yet there's so much possibility to those ships.

2. I wish I had the opportunity to get training in the Lindamood-Bell method of reading remediation. I have heard from multiple sources that it is truly effective, and I would love to be able to start making a difference with struggling readers.

1. Any help you can give me on my latest project. I'm creating a curriculum to teach reading to children, starting with the basics of learning to read. It's based on synthetic phonics because that is the only 100% effective method. I'm going to be releasing it under a Creative Commons license so that it's free for everyone to obtain, use, even tweak and re-release as they like. But I need help, in the way of people who can draw pictures (I have to use public domain line drawings for illustrations, and clker.com doesn't have everything I'd like to be able to use), teachers/tutors who are willing and able to test this on young children or remedial students (the part I'm working on currently is the very first level, for those who can't read anything), and anyone who can find said people to help me out with this. I'll be happy to give you more info on the project or the philosophy/method if you're interested. I'm a teacher, and I just can't stand seeing how much illiteracy we allow in schools here in the US, and I want to do this to help correct that, plus provide a program that can be used across the world in English-speaking classrooms.

You're welcome to either leave a comment here, or e-mail me (you can find my e-mail as a graphic--for spam prevention--on my website, which is linked to from my LJ). Merry belated Christmas and a Happy New Year to all! :)
I was intrigued by this new Northrop-Grumman drone, however, in my humble opinion, I disagree with the host's "sales pitch" for want of a word. 8 laser-guided rockets does not close air support (CAS) make.
Complement it with a gatling gun, then that's (at least to me) complete CAS.

1st-Jan-2010 12:08 pm - Where Is This
Judging merely by the sky, flag, and architectural cues, where is this?
Is this a Malaysian compound in Manchester? Or perhaps somewhere closer to home, haha.

HAPPY END OF 2009, EVERYONE!!!

Yeah, I'm announcing it early. BOO to this year!
31st-Dec-2009 03:00 am - Appropriating A Term.
According to the Urban Dictionary an "airhead" is a:

"a stupid person(i.e. there is air where brains should be)"

However, I'd like to appropriate the term for another use. In my books, the airhead is either the best supporting friend or the worst nightmare of the treadhead, which among other things is defined as "a person who is fond of or has a fascination with armored fighting vehicles".

In short, an airhead, such as myself is "a person who is fond of, or has a fascination with aircraft".

We come in all persuasions. Some like airliners, some go military.
Some like wings, while others like rotors.
Some like the cutting edge soaring fast and high, while others stick close to the boots and treads on the ground.

But we're all airheads one and the same. =)
31st-Dec-2009 02:26 am - I Will
In 2010 I will continue to speak out against racism in all its forms.
I will continue to call for a unified Malaysia, and not just that, a world that is at least beginning to try to move past the divisions of race and colour.

I know I will not see it in my lifetime, but I will not give up trying.
